The full moon is not owned by one story. Shaiva, Vaishnava, river pilgrimage and regional traditions all meet on the same date.
What is Dev Deepavali?
In Varanasi, Dev Deepavali transforms the ghats with vast numbers of lamps on Kartik Purnima. The name is commonly understood as the Diwali of the gods.
It is separate from the main Diwali on Amavasya. Confusing the two erases the lunar structure that makes them distinct.
What is Tripurari Purnima?
Shaiva tradition remembers Shiva destroying the three cities of Tripura and therefore celebrates him as Tripurari.
The story turns cosmic warfare into a victory over fortified arrogance and disorder.
Why is river bathing important?
Kartik is already a sacred month in many traditions, and the full moon intensifies pilgrimage and bathing practices.
As with Ganga Dussehra, reverence for water is strongest when it produces care for actual rivers.
Why are there so many traditions on one day?
Indian festival dates often accumulate layers. A lunar moment becomes important, and different regions or sects place their own sacred memory upon it.
The right response is not to force one “real” meaning. It is to identify the traditions clearly.
