Kali Puja 2026 falls on Sunday, 8 November, the same Amavasya night as the main Diwali celebration. In Bengal and parts of eastern India, the night is centred on Kali or Shyama rather than only on Lakshmi.
The shared date does not make Kali Puja a small regional version of Lakshmi Puja. The devotional mood, imagery and history are different.
When is Kali Puja in 2026?
Kali Puja falls on 8 November 2026. Bengali festival calendars place both Dipabali and Kali Puja on the Kartika/Ashwin Amavasya night, depending on the calendar system used.
Formal Kali Puja can be performed late at night around Nishita Kaal. Exact time depends on location.
Why is Kali worshipped on Diwali night?
Kali is deeply connected with darkness, time, death, protection and transformation. The new-moon night gives the worship a natural setting: there is almost no moonlight, yet the ritual is full of lamps.
In this setting, darkness is not treated as something outside the Goddess. Kali is approached inside it. That creates a very different spiritual mood from simply decorating darkness away.
Is Kali Puja ancient in its modern Bengali form?
Kali herself is ancient, but the large public Kali Puja familiar in Bengal developed historically over later centuries. Scholars of Bengali religion trace the growth of the festival through regional Shakta traditions, patronage and public worship.
This matters because “old deity” and “unchanged ancient festival” are not the same statement. Living traditions grow.
What is the difference between Kali Puja and Lakshmi Puja?
Lakshmi Puja asks for auspicious prosperity and flourishing. Kali Puja turns toward a fierce Mother associated with time, mortality, protection and the destruction of what cannot continue.
Both can be devotional responses to the same dark night. One prepares the house for abundance. The other asks the devotee to face what abundance cannot solve.
Why is Kali also called Shyama?
Shyama means dark or dark-hued and is a beloved name for Kali in Bengal. Shyama Puja is therefore another common name for Kali Puja.
The name softens nothing about her power. It places that power inside an intimate devotional relationship: the terrifying Goddess is also Mother.
How is Kali Puja celebrated?
Celebration varies by temple and household. It can include images or murtis of Kali, offerings, lamps, flowers, mantra, stotra, homa and late-night worship. Large public pandals are also central to modern Bengal.
Ritual details can differ significantly between Shakta lineages. A general article should not pretend there is one universal puja procedure.
What does Kali Puja ask us to face?
Diwali language often speaks about light defeating darkness. Kali Puja complicates that sentence. Sometimes the sacred is encountered not after darkness disappears, but inside it.
That is one reason Kali can be frightening and comforting at the same time. She does not promise that nothing will end. She becomes the Mother even where endings cannot be avoided.
