Guru Purnima falls on 29 July in 2026. The day is also known as Vyasa Purnima and honours teachers, lineages and the transmission of knowledge.
It is easy to turn Guru Purnima into a day of photographs and reverential captions. The older challenge is harder: what does it mean to become teachable?
Why is Vyasa remembered?
Vyasa is one of the great organizing figures of Indian sacred literature, associated with the Mahabharata, Puranic tradition and the ordering of Vedic knowledge.
Whether approached historically, devotionally or textually, Vyasa represents transmission on an enormous scale. Vyasa Purnima therefore honours not only one teacher but the continuity of teaching itself.
Does reverence mean not asking questions?
No. Bhagavad Gita 4.34 places humility, inquiry and service together. The student bows, but also asks.
This balance matters. Pride cannot learn, but blind obedience is not the same as wisdom.
Who counts as a guru?
Traditions use the word at different levels: spiritual master, initiatory teacher, scripture teacher, music guru, yoga teacher and more. Not every respected teacher occupies the same religious role.
Precision protects both the student and the tradition.
How can the day be observed?
Thank a teacher. Revisit something they taught you. Study a text slowly. Resume a practice you abandoned. Offer support to someone who teaches.
